A-Z Microfiction: H is for Helsinki

Apologies for the late post for H - I was out of Dublin at the weekend and didn't manage to get today's piece of microfiction up. On the plus side, two stories today - one this morning, one this afternoon :)

Helskinki - 20th June 2012

Laila paused on her windowsill for a moment, listening.
'Hurry up!' Daniela called from the garden. 'We're late enough already!'
She watched as Laila braced herself and jumped. The two girls broke into a swift jog.
'When will you grow a pair and start sneaking out before dark?' Daniela asked, as they rushed towards the rave in the harbour. 'We get five hours of darkness at this time of year. It's hardly time to get to the rave and home again.' It sucked having your social life depend on someone who was afraid of her parents.
'Do you think Matt will be there?' Daniela asked. Laila glanced at her watch.
'He may have left by now,' she said.
By unspoken agreement, both girls jogged faster.

  1. Reading this I thought it was remarkable how you manage to put something of each place in the pieces you write. Like in this piece the short time it's dark in Helsinki and surrounding areas. That takes a certain general knowledge most people don't have.

    1. That's not general knowledge, it's research :) I did want to try to capture something of the spirit of each place alright, and I'm glad you feel I'm managing it! One of the most enjoyable parts of this challenge for me has been learning about so many interesting places.

    2. ha, never thought the absence of darkness would crimp someone's social life. :-)

    1. Honestly? Because I read a teen novel recently where one of the characters talks about a rave in the harbour in Rejkajvik, Iceland, and I loved the idea of it :) Call it theft or homage, whatever you want!
